The class of 2010
The polishing of precious metal
is most probably one of the most underrated skills in the craft but can
make or break a piece that has taken hours to manufacture in minutes. The skill
is very important in making your work look professional and is very
rarely taught.
At last an opportunity with a 3
day course, to learn some of the secrets, techniques & improve your
skills, with a polisher who probably is the only Jewellery & Silver
polisher in the trade with 40 years experience.
The course includes some
very traditional methods and also the use of machinery associated with the
polishing of precious metals.
All these machines will be
readily available to use.
The course is suitable for
students with jewellery or Silversmithing skills but also those wishing
to extend their knowledge from other disciplines such as designers or sculptors. You are encouraged to bring along some of your own work
for discussion and use as examples. We will cover both theory and
practical subjects which will be focused on the students here present in
the class and we will be flexible.
Areas for demonstration and
study may include:
Health and Safety related issues
How to prepare for the best
results
Hand polishing & burnishing
Use of abrasives, sand,
composition & the various tools that are used such as leather, felt,
brushes & various grades calico mops.
Finishes such as, bright, matt &
textured surfaces with the standard buffing method.
Specialist polishing of platinum
& palladium , now a one day course Barrel polishing.
Antique restoration
Looking after polished silver.
